the latest 12 inch in the acid test series from l.a.s absurd recordings. cardbox is a laid back, stripped down and tripped out groove with a spacey dubbed out remix from chicagos innerspace halflife on the b-side along with the bonus cut harmonia. hand painted sleeves. was delayed due to a manufacturing problem but they cleared it up right away so we could get it before the end of the year.

these redux releases are like buses, we dont hear anything for ages then they hit us with three killer eps in a row. following the grand corporation and machete savane comes the return of phoreski. we have not heard much from phoreski for a little while, but you will soon hear why when you put the needle to the record on these two new tracks. he has been busily building up his studio into an enviable aladdins den of vintage kit, wires and analogue recording equipment. all synths and vocals you hear on these tracks come from phoreski, no samples, no guests, no edits. he has been hinting at this raw, analogue authentic sound for a while, but these tracks showcase a producer at one with the machines. >brown biscuits< comes across like some lost italo/cosmic gem, but via the north east of england rather than the lakes of italy. >machines< flexes tight proto-house rhythms with some bass that will make mince meat of lesser club soundsystems whilst the feuding synth lines fight for attention. this is proper body music, play loud!

3 chairs, omar s and patrice scott. this limited ep is testament to the wild basement energy that has culminated from these nights, beautifully pressed on wax for this first ever vinyl outing. remember is a swinging downbeat vocal track based around a superb vocal improvisation from newcomer chris raine. an ambitious opener, this is fine uk hip soul with warehouse dancefloor swagger to boot. next track, the benji b endorsed cookie strips the vocals right down into a swirling motif of sunrise energy. this track sounds great on the radio, but will also find favour on the more discerning soulful floors. for a contrast flip over for the kraftwerkian micro-tech of contact to hear what a werk party sounds like at a hazy-eyed 3am and finally, as if all this wasnt enough check out the dubby, spaced-out brawn of u&me which sees second outing for vocalist chris.... on this ep which rounds things off nicely. for fans of firecracker, exit records and prime numbers, this exciting and multi-faceted ep marries uk and detroit influences with consumate ease. one to watch... plays/ supported by benji b, rahaan, kev beadle, burnski, kevin reynolds etc.

like their american third stream predecessors, the three musicians on stage, donald chifamba on cello, vimbai mukarati on sax and vocals and his brother tinashe on congas and marimbas, accompanied by the experienced pianist filbert marova, produced a kind of music that resisted any kind of stylistic pigeon-holing. it also mixed the influences of classical music and jazz but added in pop, soul and the melodies of their shona culture.

diva is a project which explores the outer regions of technos psyche - combining the trippy sensuality of chris & cosey with the brutalist analogue aesthetic of the likes of robert hood or liasons dangereuses. inspired by the vocal histrionics of strobe lit sirens such as loleatta holloway and jocelyn brown, diva calls on the protean roots of basement club music. lead track >paris stabbing< is a stunning excursion into motor city madness, abstracted disco vocals clash with a broken digi-arpeggio and hooverish bass break down, whilst the flip side >but i ve never< imposes a detuned synth siren over an industrial bass sequence and sp1200 piano stabs to eerie effect. also included is the >paris stabbing (beats)< which pares down the original, adding detuned melodic percussion into a minimalist after hours tool.

already a regular fixture on figure, swedish talent mikael jonasson returns for his third outing on the label with two cutting-edge techno experiments. incredibly crisp and clear, already primed for the worlds finest bigsystems, cravings encapsulates everything that a modern paranoid techno jam should be. surging textures, static-madness and a whole lot of detail wrapped up in a rolling, funky workout. jonasson is well known for his attention to detail and freaky, alien sound effects, and cravings only solidifies his talents there. the fizzing, low slung thump of swings still twists and shimmers in the high frequencies, full of details, but the deeper earthy kick and bass barrage take this one into more serious, heads-down zones. a real slammer for moments when you know youve captured your followers completely

burkhardts latest stroke, including the hit delight. now we are back again with a charming selection of remixes, including work by tobi neumann and julien veniel aka djulz. tobi neumanns remix reminds the attentive listener to the old days of oslo. it is so to speak on the point. its light, but still complex in a special way. tobi carefully unhinged the catchy vocals of delight, added it at some points and put his glance over it. the b-side is home to djulzs interpretation of pianissimo. a dark and powerful house track, that finds its glory in its simplicity. a subtle piano sample is the basis for a forward moving drum pattern. here and there an eerie vocal shot rises and guides the dancer through the musical mind of djulz.

boris bunnik goes under many aliases. numerous smaller projects, some huge faceless projects but mostly known and well respected for his conforce project. as versalife he found his way to the clone familia for his night time activities project, and around this same period we just managed to pull out the best suitable tracks for frustrated funk. versalife is electro-techno in its purest form. deep and intense analog rhythms with crisp percussion patterns slightly touching the more experimental side of things. this ep is a nice balanced mixture of industrial drone material to more classic sounding electro with versalifes own signature strength. highly recommended as always!

nice price deal !!! we are glad to welcome two gladiators of the slow-house game to our comfortable little home. behling and simpson have turned quite some heads over the last year with great efforts on their homelabel futureboogie recordings and bristol based applepips. with their recognizable slow but jacking sound they have now come up with a mesmerizing 3 track counting ep which covers different sides of their varying flavours.

ts7, fresh from reworking singles for afrojack and tulisa, presents >grade a<, a colourful basssline number. in what will be his first vinyl outing since 2008, ts7 utilises his 4x4 roots, working a clever looping bass to perfection with some neat vocal sampling to give it bags of dancefloor swagger. complimented by a heavyweight remix package, >grade a< certainly packs a punch. remixes come from hyperdubs walton and mista mens mella dee. walton delivers an incredible grimy rework, culminating in a series of earshattering breakdowns and some fantastic synth work that draws comparisons with some of wileys early productions. mella dee, meanwhile, moves away from his 8-bar sound as heard in coyotes debut release >ctrl<, and looks to house for inspiration with >grade a< receiving a thorough rework in that vibe. full of the sounds more familiar with his mista men productions but packing more of a grimy punch, mellas remix is a surefire dancefloor favourite.

after almost 4 years of silence tolcha are back with neustadt, another intense and suspensefully cinematic full-length lp. like the title of the record suggests, the berlin based four piece decided to pursue a neo-retro vision of a sonic after-future with this one. what does that mean? the record clearly leans on a motorik aesthetic, but all the while redefining it with modern production techniques and surges of their very own breed of dub, rather than rehashing genre related cliches.

the a side arbitrary stakes out its intentions early with a solid groove and dubbed out stabs. a little vocal in the main breakdown increases the tension before it all kicks back in with a reassuring thud. on the flip galaxy high is equally deep but opts for some juno chords and soaring strings to bring it life. finally on lgb some 80s soul samples are worked in to a slightly tougher electronic jam.

dusty baron aka latecomer may be a recent arrival on the scene, but he plays like a true veteran. a mysterious export from the around same eastern latitudes as label boss vakula, his music, much like vs, sounds just as rooted in the post soviet russian landscape as it is in the post industrial north america which gave rise to all the soul and machine funk that is the driving inspiration for so many of todays roots conscious electronic artists. vakula takes the controls on side a with dubwise and exotic production skills whilst side b showcases the barons heavy heavy chops, with drum programming as deft as his keys work, and a sound which is equal parts earthly and heavenly. sides c & d (on bonus 7inch) see v step up to offer two takes on >follow shot<, continuing the theme of techno tinged jazz cosmism. a noble introduction, by way of collaboration, to the dusty baron and his sound, and yet another installment in lelekas continuing contribution to the musical space time continuum.

with the back catalogue burned to cinders and the last few dog eared copies at freerange hq looking more than a little shabby, here is your opportunity to grab some of the labels highlights on the blackstuff. the complete boxsets have all gone now but you can still buy the box with part one and add the individual releases. here we have part three including marcel wave, jimpster and the classic solid groove remix of only freak.

the >just for fun< ep starts with the title track just4fun, which in fact breathes fun and doesnt take itself too seriously. the funky and highly infectious keys and the butt shaking groove will remind you of a track that moodymann never made, but wishes he had. next comes unlimited01 with a joyful piano melody that would fit right into a french disco with a funkier version of alain delon behind the decks. still, the rhodes chords, the slow sexy groove, the vocal hooks will get you moving in no time. thang then goes into a more detroit beatdown direction with its deep chords and smooth pads. it creates a mellow atmosphere with an almost relaxed summer feeling. this is what a funky pimp would listen to on a night car drive. the ep ends with spiritual almost tribal rhythms. inspiration would be a nice soundtrack to a 70s orgy orchestrated by a groovy guru, surrounded by a magical circle of mystical dancers. over the top? sure, but the track would certainly get this party going.

van bonn returns after his release maserung on telrae in april 2011. van bonn has been in the studio a lot since then and has worked on a number of tracks that are highlighted here. onwards i is an excursion into sound. it starts with sounds that interact in a subtle way but then as if by magic, suddenly it rises to a much higher energy level, almost pulling you by the hair. chords now kick in with the full force of brutality, like the strikes of london’s big ben and then you’d think the track will just burst. van bonn makes another turn before he lets the drums break loose. it seems as if van bonn is taming the brutality and direction of his electronic machines. abstract now meets the concrete and whoever wins the fight is up to the listener to decide. the first remix comes by raffaele attanasio who has had considerable success with der pianist and i m a jazzman and has collaborated with trapez ltd artist mihalis safras, a. trebor (trapez), as well as claude young, nic fanciulli and has shown his versatility throughout the last 3 years. juan atkins recently featured raffaele attanasio remix of no mans land by a. trebor in his charts.his remix for van bonn keeps up a strong beat programming right from the beginning. a beat monster so to speak is alive from the beginning and kicking. the track is written in a style that shows expansion and contraction and through that shows an organic breathing quality.

>output< defines analog modular sound designs with hypnotic beat structures. like all productions of lin/log organic electronic music is the main focus. his compositions defy conventional genre barriers and leave room for reflection and interpretation. but lin/log is also a young micro label for modular sound designs.

the verwunschen ep got influenced by many deep house music, tech house, but also by electronic underground music, which was not made for the club. a mixture of this and organic instruments, which are typical for his music, made the music warm and melancholic, but the cutted vocals brought a little clubby atmosphere in the track. in the bonus track >bosporus< you hear the influence of berlin tech house music. trumpets were very popular at that time in berlin. the track was only made for the club. remixes from marlon hoffstadt and matthias kick were organised, who did their own interpretation and showed some other sides of the song.

in their own words, like a radio-controlled mechanical, electro-mechanical and multifunctional musical instrument, berliner ring build up relentless and relentlessly different grooves in a characteristically non-direct way. as if playing around without focus they layer their tracks and slowly position them into form. the tracks featured here were originally released on cd on the art yard label. melodies are fragmented, often even sparse, the groove never stops, but does so with intervals and while changing focus. berliner ring references similar bands in the krautrock and post-rock genre, but it s subtlety, the originality of their self-built instruments and their songs that shift from downright groovy to more atmospheric explorations of ambience and texture guarantee them a unique voice and perspective. essential stuff.

continuing their quest to unearth deep house gems new and old, vibes & pepper introduce the world to manuel keyz with a killer four-track workout that makes all the classic moves. the strings and keys come in seductive, nocturnal arrangements, while the snippets of vocal come from true soul divas, all atop of bumping garage house funk. the tune that stands out to our ears is >orange love<, replete with sexy saxophone fit for lil louis and dreamy key flourishes that give a considered and wistful tone to the track, but really there is plenty to work with on all four corners of this ep.

ozs inkswel sends an irresistible four track package zig zagging across the globe to the door of fort unthank on the banks of loch firecracker, somewhere in the mists of scotland, via his very own powerful boogie powered super collider. opener do it is how its done, atomic funk which has been split, stretched and closely inspected, then reassembled to create a dancefloor chain reaction. the funk particles then pass through the americas and pick up the one and only chico mann. a man known for his like minded awareness of, and abilities with, the worldwide ways of the electric boogaloo, he adds his abstract afro cuban theories to tu machito. next, its a sharp turn eastwards to the old countries, whilst riding the waves of lfo bounce. uks funkineven, another kindred spirit in the search for man made machine soul, provides further refinement to the initial wave hypothesis, resulting in a glimpse of the elusive dark matter that is often talked about, but rarely seen or heard

making all the right moves with previous form on aus, needwant and tusk wax, ejeca is well tapped into the revivalist house zeitgeist with these hale and hearty jams for waze & odyssey. solid inner city chords and crisp, bright drums abound on side a, with >night rays< sure to inflict some damage with its fulsome square wave bassline. on the flipside, >never forge< ups the tempo for a cut that dresses like tech house but moves like 2-step. waze & odyssey themselves bring a smoother, deeper vibe to bear on their remix of >riddim<, pulling the melodic content right back to subtle flecks for a greater dramatic impact.

definition of d is a little tribute to detroit, the city that influenced and later embraced my music in the mid/late 90s. this ep is an attemt to make music that is closer to the sound that i started out making but still different from the old detroit releases. high tech soul and is hopefully the key here. available on vinyl

r&s welcome new signing mpia3 to the label with a doublepack of uncompromising techno. mpia3 is a production alias of truss (perc trax) who has just the two eps preceding this on shifteds avian label. >your orders< see him continue down the path of raw, industrial, seriously funky, acid techno. his signature overdriven kicks recall classic robert armani and his sound harks back to the days of mike dearbourn and djax up beats, and the classic uk techno of ben sims and james ruskin but the tracks on >your orders< could have only been made in 2012. this is heavyweight music built for proper soundsystems and dark rooms. the six tracks on the ep straddle different tempos with some slick drum programming, but are tied together with some razor sharp synths and a healthy dose of acid.

having swiftly carved a niche for himself amongst the likes of perc, ben gibson returns to sect to deliver more of his brooding and engaging techno. there is a great emphasis on sound design and atmospherics in the two tracks on quien es?, as ominous clangs and tense tones hang heavy over rugged drum workouts. >ceased to gasp< is the more industrial of the two, but still allows for a melodic slant in the cavernous echoes that define the track. >remain< adopt a swirling, psychedelic approach to sonic decoration that draws you in just as it continues flooring you, like all good techno should. highly recommended.

assemble music returns with a three-track ep from colognes david joseph aka st. joseph, exploring further the refined, tripping path forged on the labels previous release from daze maxim. the pianos, vocal snatches and ambient hiss of josephs releases on platzhirsch are present and correct, but here the jazz flourishes are reduced down into something far slicker. these tracks have been prepared using a keen blade, and none sharper than >personal dancefloor<. heavy drum programming and a rumbling bottom end bring to mind theo parrish in his moodier moments, but the deal is sweetened by light piano, garage-like vocal samples and a deep, burning 4 love bassline. >indigo< spins the duke ellington classic into a spiralling, shuffling chugger that will bring a 30s harlem spirit to enterprising dancefloors. move the needle to the b2, though, for the eps party hit. written in 2009 and reflecting that years raw arrangements and joyous samples, >wave/table/muscle< finally gets a vinyl release, proving this sound endures to this day. expect more of the same from assemble music with their next release featuring vera and ricardo villalobos.

after having blessed the world with >soarex< released on our sublabel irr (international records recordings), including a remix by ada, we would now like to welcome von spar to areal. and this time, the remix comes from no other than techno legend john tejada. with >jon voight<, the hamburg-based artists have created another epic masterpiece in line with their earlier electronic tracks: great emotions, melodies you will never forget... in other words: a track that will send something of a shiver down your spine. tejada, of austrian decent now living in the united states, shows full respect for the original version and comes up with a remix that has proven immensely effective on the dancefloor. it so effective that we still find ourselves awestruck in the studio. well, in the meantime, we have to admit that we went out to one or two parties, but only to find ourselves back in the studio again, still awestruck.
